YCST celebrated the 30th anniversary of City’s history making victory at Old Trafford at the recent home game against Solihull Moors. While the show on the pitch didn’t go to plan (what a shame that the anniversary didn’t correspond with the Carlisle United fixture just three days later!), 50 guests in the Jorvik Lounge enjoyed an afternoon of great memories from some of those who took part on that famous night back in 1995.

Players Nick Peverell, Wayne Hall and Glenn Naylor, were joined by Assistant Manager Derek Bell and Sue Little, widow of Manager Alan. Helping to host proceedings alongside YCST Board member, James Richardson, was former BBC Radio York Sports Editor Alastair Yeomans. Other guests included former BBC RY commentator on the night, Barry Parker, and YCFC Club Historian Paul Bowser, who compiled a wonderful presentation of cuttings, programmes, team sheets, and other memorabilia.

Joining those guests were Trust Members who had chosen to upgrade their ticket for the day, as well as sponsors from the 1955 Hillsborough anniversary event back in March, invited as a thank you for their continued backing of the York City Supporter’s Trust.

“Thank you very much for a brilliant day.  Even the weather and the result had no effect on an amazing day.  It was superb. Fabulous company, exceptional hospitality and a really unique celebration of a significant event”, said Trust Member Claire Gallant.

Meanwhile Nicky Peverell, man of the match in the second leg at Bootham Crescent said, “I had an incredible day. What a warm welcome and superb hospitality”.

Sue Little arguably stole the show, with some wonderful memories of Alan, his love of York City and the players he led at that time. She talked about his post-match chat with Alex Ferguson (no Knighthood back then) and how he never disclosed what was said between them. There was clearly a lot of respect from the Manchester United Manager, who had several more associations with City over the next few years, with player transfers, friendlies and the opening of the Training Ground in October 1998.

Wayne Hall also recalled how the win gave him an unexpected lift home. Alan had responded to ‘Ginner’s’ request to leave Old Trafford after the game with his parents by saying ‘only if we win’.

YCST would like to thank everybody at YCFC who helped us to bring this event to life and a particular word of thanks to the hospitality staff in Reception and the Jorvik and LNER Lounges on the day.

Hillsborough 54-55. Old Trafford 95-96. Now when is that next significant anniversary…….
